You CANNOT connect your Mac laptop to an external monitor using the HMDI output on the laptop to a DisplayPort input on a monitor.
Connect the new generation Apple Notebook to LCD TV / Monitor / Projector or adisplay device with HDMI cable that is suitable for MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBookAir or devices utilizing mini Displayport. Features: Transfers Audio and Video for macbook Pro / Air after 2010 version. Mini DisplayPort 1.1a input and HDMI female output.
*Top comment ’got the job done.Very easy to use. This Insignia Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI Cable was able to perfectly fulfill my need to connect my non-retina macbook pro to a tv without having to purchase an adapter and an HDMI cord. However, I have now purchased a mini Display Port to Display Port cable which supports the higher data rates of DisplayPort versus HDMI 1.0 which yields.
*I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina Display. I bought a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor (as I understand the built-in HDMI port only supports 4K at 30Hz) and I plugged in my MacBook Pro to my LG B7 OLED with a premium certified HDMI cable (which supports 4K) and I can still only achieve.
*“Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable, 2 Pack, Benfei Mini DP to HDMI 6 Feet Cable (Thunderbolt Compatible) with MacBook Air/Pro, Surface Pro/Dock, Monitor, Projector“ Look, if you are going to call something Thunderbolt compatible, you are saying that it is capable of.
The reason a HDMI to DisplayPort cable exists are for laptops, like Lenovo’s, which have a DisplayPort output for you to connect into a HDMI input on a monitor, doesn’t work the other way around.
I can’t remember the reason why this doesn’t work in the former scenario, but I believe it was something along the lines of that cable signal not being bi-directional, therefore only working in one direction..but don’t quote me on that
